EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) is fairly expensive but profusely beneficial. Olive europaea (Olive Tree) is the source of health benefitting olive oil. The Mediterranean region provides the most suitable climate and soil for the cultivation of olive trees. Olive trees hold cultural and regional significance in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean coast. The countries situated along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea or at some distance from the coast, where the chief Mediterranean climate exists, mark for the production of prime quality olive oil.

Mediterranean zone lines the countries of Southern Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. These countries are most famous for their favorable climate to supply super-quality olive oils. Olive trees are not exclusive to Mediterranean countries, they are cultivated throughout the world. However, the Mediterranean region provides rich contents as favorable features for olive oil production. EVOO is the highest quality form of virgin olive oil. Refined olive oil, virgin olive oil, and extra virgin olive oil are the different forms of olive oils based upon the nutritional retainment of olives.

How EVOO Differs from the Virgin Olive Oil and Refined Olive Oil?

The key aspect that dominates extra virgin olive oil from other forms of olive oil lies in its method of extraction and compositional retainment. As Evoo is not subjected to chemical methods for extraction or purification, its compositional qualities are not fabricated. On the other side, refined olive oil is extracted by using chemical methods and other purification methods, which can bring changes to its nutritional value.

The extraction mechanisms of extra virgin olive oil and virgin olive oil are almost similar, but virgin oil is slightly more acidic than evoo. According to the International Olive Council (IOC), EVOO has a free acidic content of not more than 0.8% while ordinary virgin olive oils are more acidic (upto 2%). IOC is an international and intergovernmental organization for maintaining olive oil consumption, quality, and policies in its trading and marketing. It was set up in 1959 in Spain.

EVOO Influences Body Soundness

EVOO is fortuitous to health in a lot of ways. The most prominent health-friendly impact of extra virgin olive oil is its unsaturated nature. Unsaturated oils are healthy for the heart and the body. They curtail the chances of plaque formation in blood vessels, thus improving cardiovascular health. You can read how unsaturated fats, obtained from plants, are healthier to consume than saturated animal fats.

In this mentioned link, you will read that unsaturated fats do not contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels. They have somewhat less contribution to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, EVOO contains polyphenols, which have active anti-inflammatory and antioxidizing abilities. Other than polyphenols, it contains a wholesome quantity of Vitamin E, which is a potent antioxidant. Chronic inflammation can be related to cancer formation and other inflammatory diseases, and EVOO serves as a mighty contributor to avoiding oxidative stress and inflammation.

EVOO has its unique scope in derma studies. Its moisturizing qualities make it a profitable substitute for synthetic moisturizers for skin. Moreover, it also protects the skin from oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species and free radicals. Some studies highlight the significance of EVOO in cognitive development. However, more research is required to understand the science between mental health improvement and EVOO consumption.

EVOO Profits Digestive Health in Profound Ways

Extra virgin olive oil has mind-blowing effects on the digestive system. Mono-unsaturated fatty acids in EVOO aid in the production and secretion of bile. We will discuss the relationship between bile and EVOO later in this blog. Extra virgin olive oil is known to have prebiotic effects. Prebiotic effects means it can improve the efficiency of gut microbiota.

There are two related terms; prebiotics and probiotics. Probiotics are the microorganisms that have positive impacts on health soundness. In the context of gut health, they colonize in the terminal portions of intestines and have mysterious healthy roles. In contrast, Prebiotics are the substances, often food that benefits the probiotics. It means they can serve as a food or supporting material for those healthy organisms in your gut. And, EVOO is a prebiotic.

In addition to that, extra virgin olive is an antioxidant and guards the gastrointestinal tract from reactive molecules that may damage the mucosal lining of the tract and give rise to inflammatory changes.

Virgin Olive Oils Have a Hand in Improved Bile Secretion

Extra virgin olive oil can be the cause of bile release from the gallbladder according to some scientific research studies. First, let’s discuss what is bile and why it is momentous in digestive health. Bile consists of bile acids or bile salts, water, cholesterol, bilirubin, and some other components. Bile is made in the liver by these components and then stored in the gallbladder. It is carried through the tiny intrahepatic bile ducts into the gallbladder. Intrahepatic bile ducts converge to form a single common bile duct. Cystic duct from the gallbladder and common hepatic bile duct from the liver combined carry bile into the small intestine.

How Dietary Fats Stimulate the Release of Bile?

Bile is significant in fat digestion. When fatty acids (which are present in the body through diet) reach the small intestine, the first part- duodenum, they provoke the cholecystokinin(CCK) release. Duodenal cells are the source of CCK release which act as a stimulus for the gallbladder to release bile. Cholecystokinin makes the gallbladder and cystic duct to contract and release bile. Extra virgin olive oil primarily contains mono-unsaturated fatty acids- oleic acids, which provoke the secretion of cholecystokinin. Dietary fats, particularly unsaturated fats act as a stimulus for the secretion of bile into the duodenum. EVOO contains approximately 55-83% oleic acid content. That can be the reason for its robust role in the secretion of bile in the small intestine.

Evoo benefits on fat digestion and fat metabolism by its active role in bile secretion.
EVOO consumption enhances bile production and secretin in to the duodenum for fat digestion and metabolism, influencing overall digestive mechanism.

Why We are Discussing Bile?

Now, coming to the main point. Why bile is so important to discuss? Bile breaks down fats into its substituent products. It is essential for fat digestion and improves the removal of fats, and cholesterol from the body by breaking them into small components, fatty acids and glycerol. Bile does its job with the vigilant role of bile acids. Bile acids emulsify fats (fat emulsification is the process in which they break down larger molecules into the smaller ones by the principle of hydrophobic exclusion). In this way, bile acids in bile are pivotal in fat breakdown and digestion.

Scientific Research Evidence

Cholesterol provides as a the building blocks of bile acids production in the liver. Hepatocytes (liver cells) take up cholesterol from the bloodstream and after a series of enzymatic reactions, convert cholesterol into bile acids. The rate-limiting enzyme in this process is 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1). CYP7A1 converts the initial cholesterol into 7α-hydroxycholesterol. After this conversion, 7α-hydroxycholesterol converts into primary bile acids, such as cholic acid. After the conjugation of primary bile acids, they are modified into active bile acids (bile salts). Bile salts are the active forms of bile acids and function as detergents in emulsifying fats in the same way fabric detergents washes away oil stains.

A research study can provide the evidence of the virgin olive oil consumption and increment in the bile activity. A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry (2003) with the title, Effect of Different Olive Oils on Bile Excretion in Rats Fed Cholesterol-Containing and Cholesterol-Free Diets shows that when rats are fed virgin olive oils such as EVOO, a significant increase in bile release and bile acid concentration are measured in different body fluids. In this research experiment, ordinary cholesterol oils and olive oils are given to rats. After the termination of experiment, an increase in the bile activity or concentration is measured in the body fluids of rats fed with virgin olive oils.

Conclusion

EVOO, no doubt is the most supreme of all olive oil forms. The main mystery lies in its high monounsaturated content and polyphenols. In this blog, we have discussed about the benefits of its unsaturated nature. Majority of the Mediterranean diets have substantial quantities on olive oils. So, these people are assumed to be healthy than those whose fat content mainly comes from animal fats. Thus, EVOO consumption is good for you and we have only discuss its one effect on health. There are a lot of other studies which provides qualitative evidences of valuable and trustworthy EVOO.
